Create a Pollinator Paradise for butterflies with our Pollinator Pots!
Our Big Bloom Pollinator Pot features a variety of three pollinator-friendly flowers, two host plant herbs, and one Silver Falls dichondra. These plants are especially friendly to butterflies like the Black Swallowtail, but also provide food for many other important pollinators like native bees, moths, and hummingbirds.
What's the difference between the Pollinator Pot and the Big Bloom Pollinator Pot (besides just plain being bigger)? The Big Bloom Pollinator Pot:
- Features a larger cultivar of Lantana than the regular pot
- Has Pentas as opposed to Celosia, which grows much larger and bushier
- Has two host plants instead of one, for more caterpillar feeding
Marigolds, Lantana, and Pentas attract and feed butterflies, while herbs like Dill, Fennel, Arugula, and Parsley provide host plants for them to lay their eggs and feed caterpillars. Your Pollinator Pot will feature different color varieties of these three flowers, plus two herbs.
This Pollinator Pot grows best in full sun. Place a Pollinator Puddler nearby for butterflies and other pollinators to have a drink while enjoying the nectar buffet. Also consider locating this pot away from any nearby bird feeders, where birds might prey on your butterflies and caterpillars before you get to enjoy them. :)
Marigolds: While Marigolds are commonly known to repel "bad" bugs from your vegetable garden (think aphids, thrips, and whiteflies), butterflies love them! The flatter surface of them provides an easy place to land, with lots of clustered petals that make nectar easy to feed from.
Lantana: Butterflies need to feed from hundreds of flowers every day. Luckily, Lantana puts out hundreds of flowers in its lifetime! Each cluster of flower heads have a dozen or more individual blooms that butterflies can feed from.
Pentas: Also called Egyptian Starflower for its many beautiful star-shaped flowers, Pentas is among some of the best flowers for butterflies for nectar. The blooms are large enough to land on, while the middle is perfect for a butterfly's long tongue (probiscus) to reach in.
Host Plant Herb: Herbs like dill, fennel, and parsley are host plants to native Black Swallowtail butterflies, and arugula is a host plant to native Checkered White butterflies (not to be confused with Cabbage White, a non-native butterfly) . If you see the foliage disappear, don't panic! It could be a caterpillar getting big enough to start forming a chrysalis. Look underneath leaves and on stems for a green or brown chrysalis, and check each day to watch it turn. In 10-20 days, you will have a butterfly!
The Details: You will receive a Big Bloom Pollinator Pot in the quantity of your choice for 50.00, or three or more for 47.00 each. Pick-up begins at the Butterfly Garden Festivus event on Saturday, May 30. You will have two weeks to pick up your pollinator pot before it is released for resale. No refunds available.
