Our Team

Family owned and operated since 2004.

We've been a family-owned garden center in the heart of Pittsburg, Kan., since 2004. In April 2016, we relocated from Broadway to our new location at 818 E. Fourth, just south of Schlanger Park at the base of the Fourth Street Overpass. Stop by or call to visit with us about your gardening and landscaping needs. We have solutions.

Our team of landscape professionals is ready to serve you.

John Harrison
Owner
John, with his wife Michelle, got his start in a garden center at 16. After graduating from Pittsburg State University, he decided to pursue his hobby full time. Michelle, also a Pitt State graduate, is a second grade teacher. They have two daughters.

Melissa Sullivan
Landscape Manager
John's younger sister got started helping at In the Garden while still in high school. After graduating from Pittsburg State University, she took over the position of Landscape Manager. She's the person to see for landscape design and maintenance.

Hellen Sallee
Display Coordinator
John and Melissa's mother worked in the floral industry for 20+ years. After managing floral shops for 15 of those, John asked her to come to work for him. She is the display coordinator for the shop.

Lyn Teague
Garden Center Manager
John and Melissa's sister-in-law joined the family business in 2015. Her love and knowledge of plants make her a great fit for the garden center. She has been invaluable with the expansion of our house plant selection.

Romeo
Assistant HR Manager & Pest Control

Our tuxedo cat, Romeo, joined the shop in early 2025. His favorite ways to spend his time are lazing in his basket, climbing the wooden support poles in the awning, hunting for mice, and eating. He also enjoys morning zoomies and meowing for attention. You can often find him just inside the front door or hiding in the wooden paneling above the registers.

Koi Fish
Resident Relaxation Experts

Orange, red, white, black, maroon, and golden — our beautiful pet koi fish always bring a smile to faces both young and old, and provide a calming presence. The koi pond is located just outside of the shop near the fountains. These fish are our pets, and are not for sale. We would miss them too much!

In the warmer months, they are available for feeding. Just ask at the front desk for fish food. Please note: the amount of food they can eat each day is limited.

Great place! If you haven't visited and you are looking for beautiful, healthy flowers or vegetables and fruits for your garden, you should make this a stop on your list! They are very friendly and will help you find anything you are looking for. Check them out!
