We love peonies here at In The Garden! Colors shift and change as they come to maturity, making every day a new and wonderful surprise in the garden. They make wonderful cut flowers to bring the magic inside, and they are very fragrant.
We have over 20 varieties of unique and hard-to-find peonies to choose from, including Garden Peonies, Itoh Peonies, and Japanese Tree Peonies.
Garden Peonies are classic peonies that come in shades of whites, pinks, and reds, and blooms unfurl from tight buds in mid-spring. This is the variety most people think of when you mention peonies.
The rarer Itoh peonies are hybrids of classic Garden Peonies and large Japanese Tree Peonies, with larger blooms, stronger stems and a wider variety of colors (including shades of yellow and orange!).
Japanese Tree Peonies are super rare and very hard to find. They have some of the biggest blooms in the plant world, reaching from 8 to 10 inches across. They come in vibrant, unique colors, including striped! Unlike Garden Peonies and Itoh Peonies, they do not die back to the ground in winter but grow more like a shrub, with branches that stay year-round.
We’ve found a new supplier with a great selection of Japanese Tree Peonies this year – up to four times bigger than ones we have had in the past. This is a huge bonus, as tree peonies are very slow growers, and a more mature plant is ready to give you much bigger blooms right from the start.
To get the most out of all your Peony plants, we recommend using Happy Frog Soil Conditioner when planting and as a top dressing every spring.
Make sure the soil drains well and receives at least 6 hours of sunlight a day for the most blooms. Japanese Tree Peonies prefer a little afternoon shade if possible.
Deadhead old blooms so your Peony can focus on storing energy in its roots for next year’s blooms, rather than trying to produce seed heads.
At In The Garden, we’re known for our great selection and the best quality plants around. Come see for yourself at The Peony Party on Saturday, March 14!
